Sarabande - Critical Mass - Steptext

Sat 24 Feb | 21:00 | Petrassi hall
TODAY | 18:00 | Petrassi hall
The Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon will put on stage the choreographies by Russell Maliphant, Benjamin Millepied, William Forsythe. These three contemporary choreographers from different generations use and brilliantly shake up the classic style. From many years the Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon makes it shine its versatility and its dancers on the above choreographers’ repertoire. Critical Mass by Russell Maliphant, is from the 1998. Going out from the dim light, two dancers abandon themselves in a fight that is fierce and harmonious, tense and relaxed at the same time. Moving forward slowly, conflicts, maintained disequilibrium, flexible acrobatics and embedded relations follow one another.

Sarabande by Benjamin Millepied. Created in 2009, this choreography opens on a solo variation and alternates sequences of two, three and four. The dance, joyful and light, seems to be invented as it written. Exact on the notes, fluid and flexible.

Steptext, created in 1985, is one of the first William Forsythe’s ballets. The shot of this stunning opera, that deconstructs the performing codes, is always exciting. In counterpoint to Ciaconna in D minor of Bach, the choreographic division is extremely tense. Four performers – a woman dressed in red and her three male partners – wisely enlace explosive pas de deux.
